If you plan to clean a guitar, whether it’s yours or someone else’s, you’re actually making an effort to prolong the life of your instrument. As much as you might take good care of it and keep it in its case, dust and dirt can still cling to your guitar body and work its mayhem.

1. Wipe the back of your guitar neck.
With your hands constantly flying all over the fret board, the front and the back is going to pick up some unwanted human juice. Get a small rag and a squirt of Windex on the back of that guitar neck to get rid of some of the grease and preserve the shine.
2. Keep your cable inputs clear.
When guitars haven’t been plugged in awhile, you might hear unwanted noise and distortion from the inputs from them wearing out or just becoming dirty. Clean a guitar’s inputs with a q-tip or a toothbrush and if you need to get them wet, wait at least a couple days for the insides to dry out before plugging it in.
3. When you’re really sweaty, keep a towel nearby.
Sometimes when you play and get rowdy, you’ll sweat, especially when the summer heat gets to you. In those cases, it’s good to have a towel nearby that you can wipe off your guitar and your body so there aren’t smudges all over your instrument.
4. Leave a rag in your guitar case.
You’ll never know when it’s going to be time to clean a guitar of yours until it gets muddy, greasy, wet, or just plain gross. Save yourself some trouble and have a soft rag in your guitar case to grab whenever you need it.
5. Don’t carelessly leave your guitar case open.
One of the best ways of keeping dust and dirt off of your instrument is by keeping it in the guitar case, but it’s pretty worthless if you don’t keep it shut. When you’re not using your guitar, stow it in its case with the lid securely fastened to keep it safe.
